About rawan01

Hello, I am Rawan; a Middle Eastern college student at Cal Poly Pomona. I hope to become a newscast reporter in the near future. I love writing and reporting and feel very blessed that I have found a major and career that fits me best. In this blog, I will discuss cartoons because watching and collecting animated movies is one of my biggest passions. I will mainly write about cartoons that have adult humor such as films by Disney/Pixar, DreamWorks, Tim Burton, Universal, and more. I will also write about television shows mainly “Cartoon Network's -Adult Swim" shows because they have a distinct humor to them that I really enjoy. I will give background on the cartoons, write reviews and post clips that illustrate by points. I hope you enjoy reading and watching them as much as I do. Thanks for tuning in.

Roger Smith’s Many Faces

Roger Smith is a big part of “American Dad.” I think it is safe to say he is the biggest wacko of them all and the show would not be the same without him. If you are familiar with the show, you know Roger has many personas and disguises to go with them. Here are a few of my favorites.

ricky spanish
Ricky Spanish is a bad ass. As a matter of fact, he is so bad that everyone in town hates him and is after him for his malicious wrong doings.

professor baxter Professor Baxter teaches at Hayley’s community college and does not hesitate to give her detention.

Kevin Bacon Yes, it is Roger as Kevin Bacon.

Dr. Jordan Edilstein Dr. Jordan Edilstein is head of the Political Science Department at Harvard University.

Laura Vanderbooben Laura Vanderbooben is curvaceous, sexy and a trap created by Roger in order to seduce co-workers in the office to sue a firm for sexual harassment.

Jeannie Gold Jeanni Gold is popular for being the best wedding planner in town.

Disney’s Top 5 Creations

Dis
lion

5. The Lion King

What I love about this movie is all the heritage and culture it conveys. It is obvious just by the names of the characters that there is a uniqueness to this creation. Many of the characters names actually have meanings in Swahili.

Simba means lion; Nala means gift; Pumbaa means foolish; Shenzi (hyena) means uncivilized; Rafiki means friend and Sarabi (Simba’s mother) means mirage.

4. Alice in Wonderland
alic
The story of Alice is bizarre in itself, but the Disney version of the movie did a great job of adding the perfect imagery for this strange and peculiar animation. There is not a dull moment of the film which makes it one of my top selections of Disney movies.

Kathryn Beaumont was only 10 years old when she was chosen to voice Alice in “Alice in Wonderland.” Disney liked her so much that they even used her image as the model to create Alice.

3. Beauty and the Beast
BB

I can never get enough of this movie. I think I watched it until the videotape fell apart when I was young. Here’s a fun fact. Belle is the only person in her town that wears blue. Later on when she meets the beast, he is also wearing blue. Art Director Brian McEntee color keyed the two characters to highlight them as unique compared to the rest of the characters and especially the townspeople.

Disney was originally going to have Jodi Benson who voiced Ariel from “The Little Mermaid” also voice Belle but later decided a more European voice would better suit the character, so they went with Paige O’Hara.

2. Aladdin
al

It is unbelievable how much money this masterpiece ranked in. “Aladdin” was top grossing film in 1992 and earned $500 million worldwide during its theatrical release. Scott Weinger, who plays Steve, D.J.’s boyfriend from “Full House,” does the voice of Aladdin. Robin Williams voiced genie, but after a fall out with Disney during the casting for “The Return of Jafar,” Dan Castellaneta who is most famous for voicing Homer from “The Simpsons” took over as genie. Another fact that makes “Aladdin” special is Princess Jasmine was the first non-Caucasian Disney princess. What a big move that was for society.

1.The Little Mermaid

This movie is my favorite movie of all time and still touches my heart every time I watch it. It has adventure, excitement, emotion, and drama. The wonders of the sea is what makes it most interesting to me and also, the fantasy of mermaids and merman actually existing.

Even though many movies end up causing some kind of controversy, “The Little Mermaid” stirred up a pretty interesting argument coming from feminists. Some women feel that it is wrong for Ariel to only be concerned about her love life and not hold any other hobbies or goals. Because of this controversy, Disney made sure that future heroines did have a motive other than falling in love: Belle loves reading, Tiana loves cooking and Rapunzel loves arts and crafts. Some disagree with the accusation of Ariel not having other motives and believe that her interest in the human world was her motive before she even fell in love with Eric.

The Voices Behind American Dad

Here is the “American Dad” crew reading aloud a script from the show. It is very interesting to watch the voices from a cartoon come out of normal looking people especially because Seth Macfarlane acts out three different characters voices in such a short period of time. Now that’s talent!

American Dad: Hate it or Love it

The All American Smith Family

The All American Smith Family

This is my favorite show, not only because it is hilarious, but because it is unique compared to its sister shows such as “Family Guy” and “The Cleveland Show” because it uses unintentional humor. The characters don’t crack jokes, but instead use the peculiar circumstances of their lives that happen to turn into wild antics, and it sure is amusing to watch. This is great because it gives the sitcom its own voice and differentiates it from other animated sitcoms.

According to the creators, the show starts off with story lines that most people can relate to. Here is an example from my favorite episode. Roger and Steve decide to dress Roger(the alien) up as a girl so Steve’s best friend Snout can be distracted from his love for Hayley. They decide to call this character “Jenny Fromdabloc.”  I think most people can relate to this because sometimes people think hooking up a friend with a new person will help them get over their current obsession. The plan makes a wrong turn when Roger falls for Snout and even uses a stress ball shoved up his dress to mimic a vagina while having intercourse with Snout. See what I mean by wild antics.

Snout and Jenny meet for the first time. Magical!

Jenny and Snout meet for the first time. So magical!

This show does not make everyone laugh. Many people are offended by its jaw dropping humor such as references to ejaculating, oral sex and other sexual content. The Parents Television Council has been fighting for cancellation of the show for some time now. The PTC feels that the show airs too early on Fox, therefore is likely to corrupt young children.

The creators of the show are known for their edgy humor. Look at Seth Macfarlane for instance. He also created Family Guy, Ted and hosted the last Oscars Awards. He began working for Cartoon Network Studios as an animator and writer for “Johnny Bravo” and “Cow and Chicken.” Macfarlane also does the voice of Stan Smith and Roger making him a huge part of “American Dad.”

The show is also created by Mike Barker, who is also involved in “Family Guy” as the original writer and producer. Matt Weitzman, who is also a creator of “American Dad” was originally a writer for “Family Guy” as well. Do you see the pattern here?

Latest Trailor of Monsters University

Here is the latest trailer for “Monsters University.” Notice the amazing quality of the animation. Another observation that can be made by viewing the trailer is that the story line doesn’t focus on Sulley as it did in “Monsters, Inc” but on Mike and Sulley’s relationship and Mike’s dreams of being a scarer.

They’re Back and with New Friends

Remember “Monsters, Inc?” Well, the monsters are back and badder than ever. Thanks to director Dan Scanlon and producer Kori Rae, “Monsters University” will be released June 21 and is the first prequel to ever be released in the history of Pixar, making it a must see movie.
What a lovable pair
The film brings back the lovably, scary creatures from 2001’s “Monsters, Inc.” and captures the collegiate experience of Mike and Sulley by providing the background story on how the two friends first met. The creators wanted to create a story of how the two characters met and a college setting was perfect because they didn’t want to go too far back to where they were not familiar to fans. The movie focuses on what one experiences when first arriving at college and realizing that it’s not an easy time in life. Another reason why the college theme was chosen is because the age period is such a critical time in anyone’s life that fans can relate to the story line.

The characters needed to look younger than the previous film because they are now in college. The creators noticed that making them appear skinnier made a huge difference. Also, making them brighter in color and much more energetic gave the monsters a younger image and persona. The creators had perimeters that they were sure they didn’t want to cross because they still needed to look like Mike and Sulley and still be recognizable to the fans.

Many new characters were created for the film. The creators needed inspiration to come up with so many new personalities, so they based them off of people they knew during their own college experience .One character that is newly created is Scott Squishy Squibbles, who is a typical 18-year-old college student that has not decided what he wants to be. In a way, college students are a ball of clay wanting to be molded and in this case he is literally a mushy tiny ball of clay. New technologies for this film compared to “Monsters Inc” are the hair simulation and different lighting that creates a much richer look to the animation. “Monsters Inc.” was an amazing film that always stuck with me. The relationship between Mike and Sully is memorable and to see them again but this time with brand new adventures, more characters and more advanced technologies is very exciting.

Behind the Scenes of Squidbillies

Here They Are!!!

If you’re familiar with “Squidbillies” then you know all about the dysfunctional Cuyler family and their wild antics. Well, here is an inside scoop on the magic that happens behind the scenes. The creators of “Squidbillies” are Dave Willis and Jim Fortier. Willis is the co-creator of “Aqua Teen Hunger Force” and has previously worked with Fortier on another Adult Swim creation called “Space Ghost Coast to Coast.” Obviously there is a pattern here. These people are dark humor junkies and are all over Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim. There no better place for this kind of absurd and borderline disturbing humor.

Bobby Ellerbee does the voice of Sheriff. Ellerbee and the rest of the gang don’t always go by the script. The creators are completely open to their actors adding to the script as they go. The best creations are sometimes the least planned especially with this gang on comical geniuses.

Daniel McDevitt plays the voice of Rusty. He is a childhood friend of Willis’. He was picked for this position because they can never find someone in Los Angeles that can do the voice over with a credible southern accent the way McDevitt can.

Dana Snyder, a theatre major and a trained professional actor, does the voice of Granny. He has previously worked with Willis in “Aqua Teen Hunger Force” where he does the voice of Master Shake. Willis believes Snyder was the funniest person auditioning for this role and the most credible person to do Granny, a 172-year-old daughter of the American Revolution.

Stuart Daniel Baker, also known by his stage name as Unknown Hinson, does the voice of Early. Hinson naturally has a very similar way of speaking as Early does. He has a strong southern hillbilly accent and even his attitude is similar to Early’s making him the best possible fit for this part. He inserts his own flavor into the character and even comes up with words and phrases to use. The person doing the voice usually has a connection with his/her character that goes deeper than just a voiceover and Hinson is a great example of this.

Mary Kraft plays Krystal who is Early’s 700 pound human girlfriend. She’s pretty hot for a blonde with a mullet that sips out of a big gulp mug all day. According to Early, she is definitely easy on the eyes.

This show is put together by some incredibly unique people. If you have not watched “Squidbillies,” I urge you to do so. You will realize quickly that the people behind the making of the show are the farthest thing from regular, average people. Out of all the animated shows I watch, this one has the weirdest and most distinctive humor.

The Cuylers are quite the family. They get involved in illegal activities such as drunk driving, selling drugs, and faking the kidnapping of their child to get public attention and donations. If this sounds entertaining to you then tune into Adult Swim. Airing times vary.
